Broad-based, timely music for thinking people - *****

Elements of Zappa, R & B, uncut jazz, and (quite consciously) Steely Dan can all be heard, among other things. Beyond that is the compassionate anger of a man whose once idealistic vision has been beaten down into a wiser and justifiably cynical mix of spiritual and politically based commentary on the ravages of American greed and unconsciousness. Not to be missed. And give it a few plays; it gets better as you get to know it!

Humor in music is not new, but there is a distinct difference between music with a sense of humor and novelty music. Songs For A New American Century Vol. 1: Let Them Eat Cakeadeptly walks the line between the two with a spring in its step. Big Money opens the collection of twelve songs by lambasting the way that corporate and special interests have taken over our governance. When All The Earth Is Texas is a nationalistic ode to the Lone Star State. My God brings a bit of humorous religious fanaticism to the album while outlining one of the primary reasons for war in human existence.

Cool 2B Dumbb ironically celebrates the de-intellectualization of public discourse. The music throughout Songs For A New American Century Vol. 1: Let Them Eat Cake is mellow rock with world music influences and finely crafted melodies. SNAC is a collection from a fine songwriter offering intelligent, sometimes funny lyrics and great hooks. The guitar work is excellent and builds a tight and highly listenable sound. The album closes out with Liberty Suite, a collection of three tunes that really show off SNAC's pop-rock sensibilities.

Songs For A New American Century Vol. 1: Let Them Eat Cake is a very pleasant listen: Smart, at times funny and always poignant. The musical compositions are well crafted and mellow. Songs For A New American Century Vol. 1: Let Them Eat Cake is definitely a pleasurable listen. Check it out.
